What’s Growing at Greystone?

In its early days, Greystone functioned as a  working farm. It had several greenhouses dotting the landscape and even with the remodel in 1947, part of the building permit included the addition of another greenhouse. Sadly, the original farm and greenhouses are forever lost to history. However, a door to one of the greenhouses was preserved and still serves as a screen door in the basement. We also have an original planting table that is still used today for planting and potting!

As a nod to the acres of farmland that surrounded Greystone and its time providing fresh produce for residents around Ridley and Swarthmore, we installed a 160 sq.ft vegetable and native plant garden in honor of Lena Donato, Greystone’s original gardener!

The garden contains six raised beds that allow for easy planting. Vegetables always include classics like tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot), brassicas, asparagus, various herbs, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, onions, garlic, green beans, peas, zucchini, and squash.
